GSDS is a Tobacco Prevention Program of the Delaware
Parents Association. Delaware Parents Association has offered
this program for the past 5 years in the Capital & Caesar
Rodney School Districts. The program works with youth sharing
about and discussing tobacco use and the effects it has on our
bodies and minds. The youth are introduced to what tobacco is,
the different kinds of tobacco, how tobacco affects the respiratory
system, nicotine and addiction, the harmful effects of second
hand smoke, and how peer pressure often is key to why youth begin
to smoke.
At the beginning of each session, the youth are
given a survey to examine their knowledge of smoking. At the end
of the session, the same survey is given to determine how much
the youth have learned and whether or not they would consider
smoking. Registration is setup through the school which also determines
which grade levels will participate in the program.
The Get Smart, Don' t Start program has been made possible through
the Delaware Division of Public Health’s Tobacco Prevention
Community Contract.
Funding for the Contract is provided by the Delaware Health Fund
and managed by the American Lung Association of Delaware.
